We all know that books make the best presents – but why not do something a little different this year for Christmas? Instead of just giving your loved one a book or two, why not create a romantic gift basket for that someone special, and fill it with a few other things to bring them joy and happiness?
We know how difficult it can be to come up with ideas for thing’s like this – so we are taking the stress out of Christmas for you. In a series of blog posts, starting today, we will show you what to put in your gift basket, and where to buy it from, to make your gift extra special.
Our first Gift Basket idea is a romantic one, based on our New release: “The Mountains Between (3rd Edition)”
“The Mountains Between (3rd Edition)” is a story of love overcoming difficulties. Despite its physical comforts, Jennie’s life under the critical eye of her tyrannical mother is hard, and she grows up desperate for a love she has been denied. As she blossoms into a young woman World War II breaks out. Life is turned upside down by the vagaries of war, and the charming, urbane Charles comes into her life – and he loves her …doesn’t he? …On the other side of the scarred mountain, in the wake of a disaster that tears through his family and their tight-knit mining community, Harry finds the burden of manhood abruptly thrust upon his young shoulders. He bears it through the turmoil of the Depression years, sustained only by his love for Megan. But his life too takes many unexpected turns, and the onset of war brings unimaginable changes…Nothing is as it was, or as it seems …Blaenavon and Abergavenny surge to life in this vibrant, haunting, joyful masterpiece – a celebration of the Welsh people from the 1920s to the 1940s. It’s the saga of two families and their communities, and the story of two young people who should have found each other much sooner. It’s the story of the people of the mountains and the valleys who formed the beating heart of Wales.
So, now you’ve picked the book you are going to base your basket round – we can choose a theme for the rest of the basket. As “The Mountains Between” is set in Wales, why not choose a Welsh theme and pick some of the best things Wales has to offer?
When I think of Wales and romance, the first thing that comes to mind is a Welsh Love Spoon! So, why not include this in your gift basket? The custom of giving a lovespoon began in the 16th Century as a courting gift, similar to giving a bunch of flowers say, but obviously longer lasting! The traditional LoveSpoon is carved from just one piece of wood!
Heart & Twist Love Spoon – £19 – Adam King
Why not go for something simple yet effective, like this beautiful Heart & Twist love spoon by Adam King? He also takes commissions too.
The next thing I would put in a Welsh themed “The Mountains Between” romance basket it a beautiful scarf made of welsh wool – like this one from The Honorwood Flocks:
Hand Knitted Shetland Wool Scarf (bred on a Welsh Farm) – £30 – Honorwood Flocks
The Honorwood Flocks are based at Cefn Llanfair, which is based just above the Tifi Valley near Ceredigion, North Wales. It is a family run working farm, which has specialised in the breeding and keeping of Shetland, Icelandic, Soay and Jacob Sheep for the last 18 years. All their knitwear, and rugs/throws are made locally – and you can also buy the yarns if you fancy making something yourself!
Another lovely treat would be some toiletries made by the monks on the Island of Caldey – just three miles of the coast of Tenby. Caldey Island is owned by the Reformed Cistercian Order, and has an order of around 20 monks who lead their lives according to the Rule of St Benedict. They manufacture the range of Caldey Island Toiletries and Perfumes using the profusion of wild flowers, gorse and herbs found on the island.
Caldey Island Bath Essence – £12.95 – Caldey Island
Something like this bath essence might be a nice treat for that someone special – and it is available in Island Lavender, Island Rose, Island Bouquet, Island Gorse and Island Fern – so there really is a fragrance for everyone. Whilst you are on the Caldey Island site, why not also purchase some Abbot’s Kitchen Chocolate? Made in the Monestary itself, the chocolate is hand-made by the monks, and is available in Milk, Plain, White or Extra Dark flavours.
Abbot’s Kitchen Chocolate Bar – £10.50 for 5 – Caldey Island
And just to round off the basket nicely, how about some Siocled Poeth? Hot Chocolate to the non welsh speakers amongst us!
Hot Chocolate Gift Set – £15 – The Welsh Gift Shop
All in all, a truly special Christmas gift for anyone, I think you will agree
